WaterWorX Palestinian Territories

This project works to strengthen the water sector in Palestine, focusing on improved operational efficiency, reduced water losses, and increased revenue generation. These improvements are needed to address long-standing challenges, including outdated infrastructure, fragmented service delivery, and limited resources.

The approach is organised around four main pillars: institutional, operational, relational, and knowledge. This involves strengthening local institutions, improving day-to-day management and maintenance, building stronger relationships between stakeholders, and sharing expertise through targeted training programmes, practical workshops, and innovative technologies.

The project is active in the municipalities of North Hebron and Salfit, where it works directly with local stakeholders to build the skills, systems, and networks needed for effective water service delivery.

By combining knowledge transfer, capacity building, and innovation, the initiative aims to ensure sustainable access to safe and sufficient water while supporting the long-term reform goals of the Palestinian Water Authority.

The partnership supported the Palestinian Water Authority in establishing autonomous, sustainable, and strong regional water utilities to improve the operation and maintenance of drinking water and wastewater services.

Key results include:

• Setup of Geographic Information System (GIS) as solid basis for improved and informed decision-making on assets and future planning.
• Establishing standard water tariff and ensuring that water revenues are directly invested in the water sector.
• Improved monitoring and reporting of water quality data.

• Infrastructure and service expansion – Extended sewer networks and expanded the BluElephant system to improve coverage.
• Water resource development – Identified and protected new sources, including rainwater harvesting and reuse projects.
• Planning and management – Developed investment proposals, wastewater strategies, and water safety plans.
• Water quality and efficiency – Improved water quality monitoring and reduced non-revenue water losses.
• Financial and institutional sustainability – Strengthened the financial performance of service providers to ensure long-term viability.
• Community engagement – Increased community involvement and fostered stronger collaboration with stakeholders.
