Topics

The partnership between Nairobi Water and World Waternet supports sustainable water service delivery in one of Africa’s fastest-growing capitals. The project addresses key challenges such as high non-revenue water, aging infrastructure, and the need for climate-resilient solutions. By reducing water losses and supporting renewable energy interventions, the utility saves costs and boosts operational efficiency. The co-development of Nairobi’s Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (CARP) integrates long-term planning into infrastructure and service delivery.

The partnership also enables Nairobi Water to attract investment through feasibility studies and technical assistance, including support for renewable energy and resource recovery. Staff benefit from peer-to-peer exchanges and on-the-job training with Dutch experts. This approach strengthens both institutional and technical capacity, contributing to improved water access, utility performance, and environmental sustainability. The project is part of the WaterWorX programme, aiming to reach millions with improved access to water and sewerage services by 2030.

Results

The partnership’s main goals include reducing water losses (known as “non-revenue water”) through pilot projects like the DMA-Mirema Drive initiative and staff training. It also aims to improve how assets are managed, for example by introducing the MapKit software,  and to support better decision-making at Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants through improved data use.

Another priority is to make NCWSC better prepared to attract investment. This involves carrying out feasibility studies, developing strategies, and drafting concept notes to help secure new funding for water and sewerage projects.

Through continued peer-to-peer support, the partnership works to strengthen both institutional systems and staff skills. The ultimate aim is to provide more people in Nairobi with safe, reliable water and sanitation services, while supporting Kenya’s national water security goals and the global target of universal access (SDG 6) by 2030.

Highlights

30%

Non-revenue water loss reduction

Through the establishment of District Meter Areas (DMAs) to track water loss.

Increased

Efficiency in operations & maintanance

Across Nairobi Water & Waste Water Treatment plants.

Better

Data & asset management

MapKit is software that allows for tracking equipment as part of asset management. This helps prepare maintenance plans and identify water losses.
