The “Smart Urban Water Management” project addresses Amman’s growing risk of destructive flash floods. Rapid urban growth, ageing drainage systems, and climate change are increasing this risk. Past floods have paralysed the city, caused loss of life, damaged infrastructure, and increased vulnerabilities, especially among vulnerable groups such as Syrian refugees.
As the second most water-scarce country in the world, Jordan faces additional pressure on its limited water resources, making effective urban water management even more critical.
Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the project is implemented by UN-Habitat in partnership with Greater Amman Municipality and in collaboration with the Ministries of Water and Irrigation, and Environment.
World Waternet supports the project by facilitating knowledge exchange and capacity building.
