Topics

Improved skills and knowledge sharing on sustainable urban drainage and stormwater management to tackle flash floods and water shortages

This outcome focuses on building skills and sharing knowledge to address the linked challenges of flash floods and water shortages. The project encourages learning between Jordan and the Netherlands through exchanges where officials from Greater Amman Municipality, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, and other partners visit the Netherlands. Dutch experts also visit Amman for detailed sessions on flood risk, green infrastructure, and climate-smart solutions.

These visits may be organised with Dutch partner organisations. A workshop in Jordan will bring experts from both countries together to share ideas and best practices. The project will also share its results at major events like the World Water Forum and World Urban Forum to gain global attention.

To keep the learning going, the project will develop a practical planning and design guide called the ‘Typologies of Urban Green Infrastructure’ toolkit. All these activities will help build strong knowledge and international cooperation on sustainable water management.

Results

Our goal is to strengthen the skills and knowledge of key stakeholders by promoting best practices and sustainable methods for managing water. We are focusing especially on sustainable urban drainage and stormwater management techniques.

To support this, we will assess and identify the types of urban green infrastructure that work best for Amman’s unique environment. Alongside this, we will develop a detailed planning and design toolkit called the "Typologies of Urban Green Infrastructure." This toolkit will offer clear, step-by-step guidance on how to plan, design, and build green infrastructure to manage stormwater effectively.

This toolkit will also be used to support ongoing training and will be shared with the relevant organisations to encourage continuous learning and the adoption of sustainable water management in urban planning.

Highlights

90%

Rainwater lost to run-off to be addressed

The project aims to support a shift towards sustainable rainwater harvesting and urban green infrastructure to conserve this critical resource and improve municipal and community water supply resilience.

2,300 m²

Green infrastructure pilot in Amman

The Al Zohour Green Triangle, a 2,300 m² pilot project located at a major stormwater runoff point in Amman, serves as a demonstration site for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), incorporating both stormwater detention and bioretention features.

2 major

Knowledge exchange missions

The project will support two international exchange missions, sending Jordanian officials to the Netherlands and inviting Dutch experts to Amman, along with national training workshops.
