Knowledge partnership

World Waternet is affiliated to Waternet - the public watercycle utility of Amsterdam and surroundings. Waternet is preparing for the future with a powerful research and innovation programme - to introduce new technologies, improve operations, and respond to societal challenges. The programme offers excellent opportunities to partner with leading water organisations. This allows us to tackle the same challenges together.

Background

Like Waternet, Berliner Wasserbetriebe faces major challenges. Both companies are dealing with large urban developments, circular ambitions and the need to become more sustainable in the future. Since 2017, Berlin Wassterbetriebe and Waternet collaborate and share knowledge on these themes.

Projects and acitivities

In 2020, a new 5-year Memorandum of Understanding to continue the collaboration, focusing on the following topics:

  • Removal of emerging substances in the watercycle, such as drug residues, pesticides, and industrial discharges.
  • Dealing with extreme weather conditions such as heavy precipitation and persistent drought in the urban environment.
  • Making the urban environment more sustainable by using heat and cold networks as energy supplies.
  • Joint action in international research programmes, such as Life and Horizon Europe.
