Our impact
The Blue Deal partnership focuses on improving governance, building an adequate organisation (capacity building) and transferring knowledge and expertise regarding the quality, quantity and safety of the water system in two river basins in Ghana: the (Lower) Volta Delta and the White Volta.
Activities
In the (Lower) Volta Delta:
- Establish an adequate organisation structure (River Basin Board Lower Volta Delta ) for water management and a Basin Office.
- Set up an Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for managing the delta, including the development of a water protection plan for Wetland Keta.
- Execute a Pilot of IWRM implementation by area orientated approach Songor Lagoon, starting with mangrove restoration in selected areas and involves stakeholder participation.
In the White Volta:
- Improve governance of White Volta Basin Board.
- Set up an IWRM subbasin plan with the Kpasenkpe Subbasin Committee
- Implement IWRM via an area-orientated approach in subbasin: Vea and Tono Dam (drinking water, irrigation), sanitation, reforestation.
- Reduce the impact on downstream areas caused by excess water from Bagre Dam.
Bagre Dam
Bagre Dam is a multipurpose dam on the White Volta located near Bagré Village in Burkina Faso. The video below shows how we are trying to help the authorities to avoid spilling and reduce downstream impact.

White Volta Kpasenkpe Subbasin IWRM plan
We work together with the White Volta Kpasenkpe Subbasin Committee to set up a IWRM subbasin plan to deal with the challenges of drought, lack of sanitary facilities, erosion, water contamination and functioning of the Tono and Vea Dam. The video below gives an impression of the different issues and stakeholder participation.
