Advancing water resilience in Amman: a greener approach to urban water management

10 October 2024

In response to Jordan's increasing water challenges, World Waternet is collaborating with UN-Habitat on an initiative aimed at enhancing Amman’s resilience to droughts and flash floods. The project, titled ‘Smart urban water management: enhancing the adaptive capacity and urban resilience of Amman through urban green infrastructure,’ addresses the urgent need for sustainable water solutions in one of the world’s most water-scarce regions.

Fostering water resilience through knowledge sharing
Our primary contribution to this initiative is the development of a planning and design toolkit, known as ‘Typologies of urban green infrastructure.’ This toolkit, based on our experience in Amsterdam and other global cities, will offer practical, climate-resilient strategies for managing stormwater. By providing adaptable, weather-proof solutions, we aim to support local authorities in developing urban green infrastructure that can withstand Jordan’s extreme weather conditions.

Building on existing efforts
In some areas of Greater Amman Municipality, stormwater storage measures have already been implemented. Our goal is to build on these foundations by introducing more innovative solutions that integrate urban water management with climate-adaptive designs. These efforts will contribute to a more robust and efficient system, capable of addressing both immediate and long-term climate impacts.

Learning from global best practices
To strengthen local capacity, World Waternet will host knowledge-sharing events and invite Jordanian stakeholders to visit the Netherlands. Here, they will have the opportunity to explore how green infrastructure has been successfully integrated into urban planning. Through these exchanges, we aim to inspire local adaptation of methods that have proven effective in managing stormwater and enhancing resilience.

Hands-on training for local impact
In addition to the toolkit, we will conduct a training workshop in Jordan, focusing on urban green infrastructure, sustainable urban drainage, and the incorporation of climate-resilient strategies into local planning. Our experts will tailor this workshop to Jordan’s specific needs, ensuring that participants gain practical knowledge on how to implement solutions that benefit both the environment and urban communities.

Shaping a resilient future together
This project is a key step in helping Jordan address its growing water challenges. By sharing expertise and fostering collaboration, we believe that this initiative will empower local water managers to adopt impactful, sustainable practices. Together with our partners, we are committed to securing a resilient and sustainable future for Jordan’s urban areas, contributing to better water management and long-term climate adaptation.
