IWA Conference in Kigali: Exploring Nature-Based Solutions in Water Management
19 December 2023In the week of December 11-15, water companies and boards from all corners of Africa gathered in Kigali, Rwanda, for the IWA Conference. The conference focused on the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). World Waternet and its partners actively participated in the event, not only to gain new insights but also to share their knowledge.
Practical Application of NbS: Making Water Systems Climate-Resilient
One key aspect of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) is sustainability. World Waternet has been committed to climate-proofing water companies and boards in their projects. NbS, such as building barriers in Burkina Faso's rivers to retain water and enhance filtration, has been a significant technique. In Tanzania, research is underway to use Agroforestry to combat sedimentation in the Mindu Dam.
Knowledge Exchange: Sharing Success Stories
Proud of the impact of their activities, World Waternet provided a platform for local partners from Burkina Faso, Tanzania, and Kenya to showcase how they collaborate to make their businesses climate-resilient. The report also highlights attending presentations from other water companies dealing with similar challenges. For instance, in Tanzania, there's ongoing research on effectively removing fluoride from water due to its high concentration in volcanic soil.
The report includes images from presentations and discussions, such as those focusing on the implementation of NbS in Tanzania.
