Asset management is necessary to maintain, improve and adapt existing systems, networks and objects. Waternet introduces the so-called ‘3x5 format’ that can be applied to assess and manage assets within their position in the network. Five questions are asked at three levels: (1) What will the future bring us, (2) which assets do we have, (3) are they becoming critical, (4) why do we want to change something, and (5) how can we prioritize and finance the measures? By answering these questions, we can visualise the balance between risk, costs and performance, which then will result in transparent decision making on investments and maintenance of assets.

In the transition of a city towards becoming an economic and sustainable region, water is an important driver. A water utility can connect stakeholders such as knowledge institutes, market parties and governments to realise new circular business models. As a public water organisation, Waternet demonstrates the importance of this role in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and shares its approach. Examples of water-related impact are heating and cooling of buildings with water, resource recovery (phosphate, cellulose, calcite, biomass), and smart asset management solutions.

Every year in August or September, a swimming spectacle for charity takes place in the canals of Amsterdam. Canal boats and other vessels make way for some 3000 brave swimmers, as the Amsterdam City Swim takes place in the heart of the city. These events are a great opportunity to show the value of water. To ensure that swimming in Amsterdam’s city waters takes place in the safest possible way, Waternet has developed a monitoring network that provides citizens with information on the actual water quality.
